The Gibbons Ape

"Indonesia has the shameful distinction of holding the "highest deforestation" title in the 2008 Guinness Book of World Records, destroying an estimated 300 soccer fields of forest every hour." *CNN Website*

This should not be happening in this day and age.  The forestation in Indonesia is literally killing the Gibbons ape.  There are less than 4,000 left in the world and only 150 of them are living in the wild.  They are considered the MOST endangered species in the world.  We recycle more now than we ever have.  There is less reason to cut down massive amounts of trees for paper products.  This isn't just about paper though.  They are cutting into the forest to make new homes and cell phone towers, etc.  What is it going to take before we stop killing off species?  These animals are here for a reason.  When you kill off just one species, it affects the entire ecosystem of that area and sometimes the entire world.  You kill off one bug completely and it throws of the ecosystem.  The bug kills other bugs and some birds, bats and animals eat the original bug to survive.  It's the food chain people.  We learned about it in third grade and yet it doesn't seem to have really taken hold in our brains.  And you know what's funny?  If the humane race suddenly went extinct, it would affect the entire world - for the better.  The animals would flourish.  Plants and nature would be as pristine as they were hundreds of years ago.  Ironic that WE are the species that mother nature finds expendable.

Humans are greedy and want everything for themselves.  It disgusts me when I see more and more sections of forest cut down for houses around here.  Especially with the rate that people are loosing those same houses.  Other countries that don't have the same regulations as ours are destroying themselves.  Linda

It is a tragic situation and I fully believe in the end man will destroy himself.  We can't keep raping our earth and expect not to pay the price later.  I often think some of the movies which portray earth as a barren, ugly place in the future are not too far off the mark.  Sad.
